The Graduate Summer Scholarship (GSS) is an up to $1,000 merit and need based scholarship designed to help support students who are nearing the end of their academic programs and taking Summer classes in order to expedite their program’s completion. Graduate and professional students in good standing (3.0 GPA or higher) and within 24 credit hours of graduating are eligible for the scholarship. (Ad-hoc exceptions are made for Law, Pharmacy and Medical School students, as they do not use the ‘hours’ system.) PhD students taking dissertation credit hours are also eligible for the scholarship.
Preference will be given to students near the completion of their studies who demonstrate significant financial need. Students may receive the scholarship for a maximum of one (1) semester. Students must submit a complete application packet online to be considered to receive funds. In addition, applicants are encouraged to do the following to write a successful proposal:
- Review the scoresheet to understand how your application will be scored.
- Read through our common questions page.
- Understand the GSS standing rules.
- Tuition and fees for summer classes that are required for degree completion by the student’s academic program.
- Dissertation credit hours for PhD candidates.
- Costs that could be funded through a GPSA grant, including conference travel or research-related expenses.
- Living expenses, including room and board.
- A 700 word (maximum) essay explaining how the scholarship will contribute toward the completion of the degree sought, why it is significant for the applicant’s education, and how taking Summer classes will advance the applicant’s career. Essays in excess of the 700 word limit will not be accepted. Essays must be anonymous and address all the relevant points on the GSS scoresheet. You may use the attached proposal template or create your own. Proposals must be in Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced, and use 1” margins. Please do not include your name in the proposal. Applications that do not follow this format or include your name will be disqualified. Upon completion, all applications must be saved as a PDF and uploaded to the GPSA Grants website along with the other application materials. File names should not include any identifying information.
- A letter of recommendation from the student’s advisor, employer, department chair, or professor within student’s department stating the student is in good academic standing. The letter of recommendation should reinforce the student’s academic/career goals as well has how taking Summer classes will help the applicant achieve those goals.
- A verification form signed by the student’s academic advisor (see verification form below) stating that:
- The student is within 24 hours of completing their academic program.
- The student is registered for Summer classes.
- The classes being taken during the Summer term, being paid for by the GSS, must be required for completion of the student’s academic program.
- Only GPSA members are eligible to apply for the award.
- Applicants must be within (24) hours of completing their program of study. Ad-hoc exceptions are made for Law, Pharmacy and Medical School students, as they do not use the ‘hours’ system.
- Doctoral candidates are eligible to apply for the scholarship in order to pay for dissertation hours.
- Applicants must be registered for Summer classes when the scholarship is awarded.
- Courses paid for with the GSS must be required for completion of the student’s academic program.
- Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
Applications will be scored according to the merits of the student's statement of financial need, the student's weighted unmet need score as determined by UNM Financial Aid, and whether the applicant addresses all the points clearly on the GSS scoresheet.
